Why do we dream?

Why do we dream? All these dreams and imaginations just pop into our head for no reason. Dreams are images, thoughts, and emotions just going through our head while we sleep. I had a dream one night and decided to do a topic on “why do we dream?”.

The brain is like a big full of grey matter. Researchers have done research for about a couple of decades and still haven’t figured out why we dream and the function of sleep. They really don’t know why we exactly dream yet. The dream cycle occurs during the REM and most remembered. There are theories of why we dream.

There are several theories of why we dream. Dreams work with the sleep to help the brain sort through things while you were awake. During sleep, the brain goes through all of the information you saw or thought during the day so it can keep that information or forget all about it. Some of the dreams we have form memories. Some researchers say that the things we see during the day increase while we sleep. Another theory is that dreams affect our emotions as well. The things we think about during the day, we think more at night because our mind is set on that one thing. Emotions battle each other out of what we think and see in a day. There is another theory that says that dreams don’t really serve any type of function. The brain practically just remains a mystery.

Sigmund Freud is known for his theories for his mysterious and unconscious mind. He says our dreams our little secret outlets. He thought of many things. Freud made up three parts called the ID, the Ego, and the Super Ego. They helped out the brain. Sigmund says that dreams are a way to express feelings or emotions. We dream to protect our sleep.

Furthermore, dreams just come into your head and sometimes have no meaning to it. The theories aren’t really proven, that is just what the researchers say. Philosophers don’t know exactly why we dream either. But all in all, we dream the things we dream.

Why do you think we dream?

Do you think we dream about the things we see or think about during the day?

Do you think there is more theories of how we dream?

  1. There are a lot of ways to interpret your dreams. Freud had a theory he limited to saying that we dream our wishes. Like if you dreamed that your high school crush called you up one day and started pouring her feelings to you, you could interpret that as the fact that you want her to feel the same way about you as you do about her. But like I said, its limited because it excludes those who have nightmares or boring dreams. There are also theories that we dream to prepare ourselves for life threatening situations. Other theories say that we dream to educate ourselves about our feelings towards others and to learn more about yourself. There are those who believe that dreams have no significance and is just random firings of the brains connections.

  2. Dreams are very strange, whether they serve a purpose or not. Scientists have been researching this topic for a long time. This article has material that says there are many theories from many people about why we dream, but there’s only one thing scientists agree on: that we don’t know why we dream or sleep. In the other article I had read, it suggested that dreams could be either beneficial to our lives or it doesn’t. But before we can debunk the issues behind dreaming we need to figure out why we even sleep at all.

  3. I believe some of the theories here may be correct. There have been times where I’ve dreamed of random events mixed in with events that happened during the day. Even it seems to make sense we still don’t know how dreams work. More so we don’t know how the brain works either, which could be a big problem in understanding dreams. http://www.ccmr.cornell.edu/education/ask/?quid=591

  4. I thought that this article was very interesting. I had never thought about why or how we dream. I guess that I just always believed that there was no special rhyme or reason to it. I did a little searching on this topic too and I also found that nobody really knows why we dream, or why we dream what we dream. But in an article by Ernest Hartmann (a professor of psychiatry at Tufts University School of Medicine), he explains that one theory for what we dream is based on emotions. If you have clear-cut emotions, your dreams are simple, and if you have mixed emotions, then your dreams or complicated. 5. I thought this post was really interesting. I didn’t really know the purpose or meaning of dreams, and this post helped me form some as ideas as to why we might dream. I also did some research and found an astonishing article about technology that might be able to let us watch our dreams while we are awake. It purposes the idea that when you dream, your brain projects a pattern of whatever you are dreaming about and then an algorithm can be used to project that image onto a screen later. It is really quite fascinating. The article is here:

  6. I think we dream for a reason. So are brains can be still active at night but yet get ‘recharged’ for the next day. I think we dream about both, things we see during the day and think about. Also what we want to have happen sometime in the future. There is many different theories of why we dream but who is right is the question. People do dream many different things at night whether its happy or scary. After you fall asleep for about 90 minutes your not dreaming anything. You get in the movement of REM which is rapid eye moment. You dream about things that happened that day or want to happen and your eyes move under your eyelids. http://www.ccmr.cornell.edu/education/ask/?quid=591
