Video Games: a useful learning tool?

Most people think that video games are bad for you, but in reality video is just another way to learn or improve skills. It’s just like problem solving by making the gamers think of hypotheses. Then if it doesn’t work make a new one which makes you have fun, while learning because it’s a goal driven type of learning. Video games let people step into other shoes, make decisions, and “explore consequences” that is what Alan Gershenfeld of E-Line media said. Which in other words mean you can do stuff in a game and see how it affects you if the thing you did put you in a bad situation. Then you know not to do it in real life thus helping social or other skills that may be essential.

When you’re playing a game you notice the things happening around you’re character at that time the present stems from events that your character did or witnessed in the past. From this you unconsciously help develop you’re note-taking by noting past or current events that may affect the future in your game. Another aspect is that many video games have some form of violence. Either from just dying an unseen death like falling of the screen from actually having some type of gore in your death. However this aspect of dying is a useful tool because it gives you a sense of urgency.

A very effective part of some video games is the challenges. These challenges give you a sense to do things on the side of your main goal. That is because the challenges are highly rewarding in what you get for it. The other reason people do this is just getting the satisfaction that they were able to do it. The aspect of your friends having the same challenges also drives some people to do it so they could boast about it.

There are some similarities to board games if you look closely. If you look close enough you can see that games like chess help you to improve your strategy developing skill. The thing is video games do the same thing. It does this because to get to a goal or objective you need a plan or strategy. When you develop one and you fail you usually think of ways to improve your plan so you can achieve your goal.

There are many instances were video games have been made for learning purposes. Games for children like the leapfrog game systems are specifically made for learning. The games they make for systems for children that involve learning usually use a television character from a show to keep the kid learning. Video games are very much mixed into society and people are finally starting to use them to their full potential. I just hope that people will see all the overlooked uses for video games and use them to their own advantage.

How are there some ways you think people can use video game to help you learn?

Do you think the idea of using video games to learn is effective?

  1. I totally agree with the article that the video games helps kids to learn things and improve skills, but playing too much video games could have negative effects on the children as well. to back up your point about how video games helps kids to learns things and improve skills, Studies show video games make people more perceptive, training their brains to analyze things faster. children who play video games are tend to solve the problem more faster then those who quite often don’t play video games.

  3. I can agree to a point that video games are good for our minds, but too much I think could do damage. Dr. Bavelier’s research has also effectively busted some video gaming myths. It is fact that games do not have a detrimental or “negative” effect on players’ vision; they actually seem to make a players vision better. Dr.Bavelier also did a test on a gamer’s brain to a non-gamers brain. The results showed that gamer brains reacted more quickly, due to their parietal lobe, frontal lobe, and anterior cingulated. She also states that “multitasking” such as switching from iPhone to computer to iPod is not like gaming and can be a distraction of the task at hand. It actually prevents them from accomplishing tasks quickly and well.

  4. Personally, I think video games will eventually play a large role in education. The article says that video games help people focus better. It also states that it is false that video gaming ruins your vision. It has been true to improve it instead. The article says that gamers also have a better memory rather than have an attention span of a “gold fish”.
