Do You Need a New Heart?

The Human HeartCan you list some reasons why one might need a heart transplant? If not I have the answer, they either have a damaged heart muscle, or a cardiovascular disease which include atherosclerosis, rheumatic heart disease, and vascular inflammation. These diseases are beyond a heart surgery therefore the heart needs to be replaced by a healthier heart. Many research has been done on how to prevent heart failure, or any of the diseases that lead to a heart transplant.

An important part of preventing a heart transplant is to prevent a heart failure.  Research done by the American Heart Association says that the first step of preventing heart failure(HF) are to identify and prevent the illnesses that come before such as hypertension, and coronary heart disease. Yet they also believe that one of the reasons that HF is around is because the diseases that lead to HF is genetic.

One of the main things to do is to attempt to prevent heart failure. Mayo Clinic explains that a way to preventing heart failure is to watch for high blood pressure, and to reduce the factors of coronary disease. Things you can do are not smoking, controlling blood pressure, staying physically active, eating healthy foods, maintaining a healthy weight, and reducing and managing stress. Another disease you need to watch out for is coronary heart disease. Ways to prevent this disease is also to watch your blood pressure and make sure it is not to high, watch your cholesterol, and control your weight. The only factors that cannot be prevented are age, gender, and family history. These were all ways that the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute recommend to do if you do not want to acquire coronary disease that might lead to a heart transplant.

Lets say that you do follow the steps of staying healthy but you still end up needing a heart transplant, there are new technologies being used today to reassure you of the best results at all times. In every medical drama there is, it is all the same, the surgeon carefully places the organ in a cooler filled with ice and closes the lid just as the transplant team runs at full speed to the patient. Well it is no only for the dramatic event but it is  also because they have less than eight hours to transport the organ operating room and start the surgery. “Beyond that time, there is significant injury to the (organ), which makes it unusable,” said Dr. Abbas Ardehali, director of UCLA’s heart and lung transplant program.

Now you know there are many ways you can prevent a heart transplant, and you also know that there are ways to get a heart transplant without having to worry about any failure. I researched this subject because it appealed to my interest. I asked my self a few questions that helped me dig deeper into the subject such as, what are the resent most efficient technology used today during the heart transplant and assure the patient a safe surgery and what research does the world wide web have on the latest research on how to prevent a heart transplant. I found many new things and information that I would not have known existed if it was not for this research. I leave you with a guys with a question to make you wonder how things work… If you were a person who needed a heart transplant what would you do first to prepare your self? How can my research paper help inform you about a heart transplant? And most importantly, who would help you throughout the whole thing?

  1. This is a very informational blog. Hearts are a tricky subject to talk about because it is one of the main sources of life. Doctors today are trying hard to figure out how to help people as much as possible. Heart transplants are not a new thing to the world but there are many ways we can improve on them. I think it is great that hearts come from the deceased who have donated their organs to science. I feel like this gives an opportunity to the young who have a life to live and not end someone else’s life.

  2. There are many things you can do to prepare yourself for a heart transplant. Keep calm and rest for sure are the main priorities. Don’t get your heart al worked up, that could put you into a very risky situation if your heart were to overwork and then suddenly give up. Also, people NEED to stay patient waiting for a transplant because sometimes donors don’t come as quick as you need them. I think this topic was fun to research and I recommend continuing with it.
