What is keeping me up?!

When doctors evaluate a patient to see if they have insomnia a physical exam will be included.  The doctor will also examine your medical and sleep history.  Doctors find it useful for the patient to keep a sleep diary.

Insomnia can be a short term or chronic (ongoing) condition.  Short term insomnia is normally caused by daily situations like stress at work, family issues, or a past time or recent traumatic event.  If the condition is short term it will last for several days or weeks.  Chronic insomnia can last for months or even longer.  Chronic insomnia is mostly secondary which means the condition sprouts from other symptoms or side effects of another problem.  Medical conditions sleep disorders, substances or medicines can cause secondary insomnia.

Insomnia not only affects the sleep you get, but the energy that you’ll have.  Having insomnia can affect learning, memory, and or your focus.  This condition is often characterized with having difficulty falling asleep, taking too long to get to sleep,  waking up often in the night and having troubles going back to sleep, and or waking up too early in the morning.  Symptoms can include sleepiness during the day, irritability, and problems concentrating or memory.

In most situations, insomnia does not require treatment.  If someone has a minor condition of insomnia it can be prevented by trying to practice good sleeping habits.  If the condition makes it hard to function then doctors may prescribe sleep supplements temporarily or on long term regimen.  Natural supplements such as melatonin can help the process.

It is recommended that most individuals get at least 8 hours of sleep, but with busy schedules it can be difficult.  Without a good night’s sleep your body cannot function at its best.  It may not seem like it but we get a lot done in our sleep.  Not only do we relax but our minds process different thoughts and we also heal our bodies.  It is very important for people to obtain good physical and emotional health and with sleep you can do just that!

  1. This made me think if i have sleep insomnia because I have troubles falling asleep at night frlom time to time. I probably don’t, but to make sure, here’s what i found: You might either sleep too much or have trouble sleeping if you’re depressed. This may be due to chemical imbalances in your brain or because worries that accompany depression may keep you from relaxing enough to fall asleep. Insomnia often accompanies other mental health disorders as well. Also, i found that Coffee, tea, cola and other caffeine-containing drinks are well-known stimulants. Drinking coffee in the late afternoon and later can keep you from falling asleep at night. Nicotine in tobacco products is another stimulant that can cause insomnia. Alcohol is a sedative that may help you fall asleep, but it prevents deeper stages of sleep and often causes you to awaken in the middle of the night.
