Animals that Predict the Weather?

It may sound strange, but there are many animals that exhibit change in behavior when the weather is supposed to turn bad. It might shock you, but these animals are the very same animals that you may see on a day to day basis! Many of these animals include cows, goats, and even lady bugs!

The first animal that is said to be able to predict the weather is the goat. It is said that when goats get close together in a group, there is supposed to be bad weather coming. Goats huddle together for security and safety. When the weather is nice however, they will wander freely on their own without a care in the world.

Another regular animal that is said to predict the weather is the ladybug. Many people believe that if lady bugs swarm together in one place then it will be nice out. This is because they love the warmth and the sunshine. However, if they are looking for a place to shelter, or if they are more often seen inside than outside, there is supposed to be bad weather coming.

Another animal that is said to predict the weather is the frog. Frogs have been known to croak more when there is supposed to be rain coming. In the sun, they are often very quiet because they are sunbathing. If it’s sunny and warm, they are perfectly content to sit there quietly. Fortunately for us, they don’t like the rain very much. This is why they make so much noise when it is supposed to rain.

The fourth and final animal that is said to predict the weather is the cow. Many farmers believed that when cows didn’t produce milk, it was supposed to rain. Cows have also been known to cluster together for safety and security when the weather is supposed to get bad. Another rumor is that cows lie down to keep the spot on the ground dry before rain.

So can animals predict the weather? Many of these beliefs are just that, beliefs. However, the coincidences with these rumors are a little odd.

-How else do these animals behave?

-Do these animals always behave this way?

  1. Very interesting blog. I’ve heard people say many times “Oh my dog is scared, there must be bad weather coming.” I think this is more common than people think. Just like how humans have ways of sensing weather and other things, I think animals have their own set of “5 senses.” I did some research and found that other species like ants not only adapt to the current weather but they do it before the weather even hits. In this article I found that a group of ants is known to fly up higher when the ground temperature and very hot and humid. I also learned from the article that birds can hear low frequency sounds bouncing off of mountains thousands of miles away. So birds and other animals do know what’s coming before we do.

  2. I thought you did a very nice job on your blog and I enjoyed reading it. I had no idea animals could predict when bad weather was coming, but I think it’s kind of cool how they act different when they sense a change in the weather. It seems like the common thing most animal do is huddle together for warmth and protection, which makes sense.
It’s kind of like the idea of groundhogs day and how the groundhog can “predict” how long it will be until spring comes. After doing a little more research I found out that there are eight animals that are believed to be able to predict weather. One of those animals is a bird. It is said that the height at which a bird flies at depends on how bad the weather will be. If they fly higher the weather is good and if they fly lower bad weather is coming. If you want to learn about some of the other eight animals you can go to:
