Human Genetics, Dangerous, or Destiny?

Imagine a perfect world, where there are no diseases, cancer, or threats to health. It seems like a work of science fiction, or a concept very far out of reach. Reach again, because the idea is closer than you think. These things could very much so be true, it’s called genetic engineering, and it would be a game changer for life as we know it. This idea of making people how you want would single-handedly destroy the imperfections in our society right now, bad looks, acne, as well as any flaws to be had. But, this then raises the question, is it right?

To do this complex sounding process, you need to insert new genes to replace the old ones to make all these things features you need. For this to happen, a virus-like organism is inserted in to replace the old gene with the new ones. Now if they  program the organism to the Somatic Genome it will affect specific areas such as organs and tissue parts. They could also program it to go for a Germline genome, which would target a sperm, egg, or an embryo early in development. That would effect offspring, making most modifications passed onto them. This may sound marvelous, but it leaves lots of people skeptical.

Even though all this sounds unbelievably godly to you, others find this damaging and immoral. Their reasons behind this are varied, most think this would kill the “mother nature” factor, meaning the random factor of how your baby will turn out would be destroyed. And with the way people think, everyone would be either a Tom Cruise or Angeline Jolie. Which brings up another reason for them, what would happen to celebrities? What separates “them” from “us” is the wow factor of their looks and stator, with this advance, everyone would look like a celebrity. With all these reasons in mind now, what’s your opinion now?

As a whole, the world isn’t ready for it yet. People are torn between the fact that it could fix so much, or cause so much trouble. It is currently banned in lots of major countries, showing that the world leaders are not ready. For them it would be a mess to clear up laws and restrictions on. But near future studies have shown that research in genetic engineering will pick up in soon years, so law makers beware. So, all in all the world is not ready for this futuristic system of baby making.

The way things are looking to go, as after mentioned in the previous article, the increase in research and interest in this shifty topic will gradually go up as people realize its potential. But is that a good thing? That’s the question that should be on everyone’s mind. While that question is very important, there’s others you need to ask yourself, such as: Why do you feel that it should be researched? Would you invest into something like this? What would you push for in this kind of research? With those embedded in your head, you have picked a side, whether to endorse this kind of idea, or to put this immoral research to sleep. Either way, the decision will be up to you in the future.

Questions to think about:

1) Why do you think that genetically engineering humans is illegal?

2)If given the opportunity, would you allow yourself to be genetically engineered? Why?

3)Do you think genetically engineering humans is moral? Why?

  1. Human genetic engineering is the completion of steps that scientists and medical professionals take to differ the genetic makeup, or DNA in a living human cell. This is a very complex process that is on the rise as far as popularity goes. Cloning is a similar way to this type of process. The only thing different is that cloning transfers DNA fragments from a single organism to a replicate of itself. Cloning comes in 3 different types of processes. These are known as DNA cloning, therapeutic cloning, and reproductive cloning. The country is in an argument over whether of not the US should ban this engineering. There is also some different ethical concerns that are rising over this topic. People are worrying that human genetic engineering may cause eugenics. This the attempt to better the human race by artificial genetic selection or breeding selectively.
