Diesel vs Gas

Today’s cars markets it’s all about economy finding ways to make cars more fuel efficient, cheaper to buy and better for the earth. Companies have made electric cars that are very fuel efficient but how they are made is worse for the earth than a normal car going a hundred life times. So what pickup gets better fuel efficiency and let’s off less emissions diesel or gas pickups.

Fuel Efficiency

Although diesel fuel cost more than gas, diesel can get better gas millage depending on the pickup you get and how you drive. A stock diesel will get around the same millage as a gas pickup but put a chip (helps in performance and make the engine run smoother) in a diesel and a gas pickup and gas will get maybe get 20 to 26 mpg but a diesel will get 25 to 35 depending on the chip. Most diesel pickups are only 2500 and weigh more than the 1500 gas pickups but now the company dodge ram are putting Eco diesels in the 1500 and stop average 30 mpg can do more than the normal 1500.

Emissions

These days they have a chemical that burns all the soot out of the exhaust on diesels making it better for the environment but having to constantly refill the chemical. Gas pickups have catalytic converters that clean the exhaust of some of the pollutants from the exhaust but doesn’t work as well as it should. Older diesel pickups do not have the chemical that burns all the soot and can be worse for the environment. Older diesels also had catalytic converters but never helped at all.

Cost/maintenance

When people go to the gas pump they all know that diesel cost more. But over the years gas has been catching diesel in cost. Gas pickups may cost less when you buy it but maintenance cost more. People who buy diesels know that they will also last longer than gas because they are made out of stronger parts from the heat it makes. People that have a gas pickup know when it hits 100,000 miles that’s when parts will start to break but on diesels you can see then reach up to 300,000 miles before something breaks. But is the cost difference in different places.

All in all each one has its advantages. If you haul a lot of trailers or heavy loads a diesel is recommended. If you don’t drive a lot or don’t have to drive far than gas is recommended.

  1. I found this article very informative. This information is helpful because I am looking for a new car was just deciding whether to get a diesel or gas fueled truck. I never knew that diesel vehicles get more miles to the gallon. My biggest deciding factor is the price at the pump. Now that i know that diesel gets better mileage and only costs slightly more, I think that buying a diesel truck is more beneficial. I learned from further research that diesel trucks were originally made to be run off of vegetable oil. Diesel engines are about 30% more fuel efficient however, they produce 15% more emissions than traditional unleaded vehicles. http://www.streetdirectory.com/travel_guide/51546/mileage_and_fuel/diesel_vs_unleaded_the_truth_about_fuel_economy.html

  2. I really enjoyed reading this article. I did not realize that diesel got better mileage than gas. Diesel did used to be cheaper than gas but now it has increasing grown in price over the years. I think that your article was easy to read for people who are not familiar with this topic. I prefer diesel over gas, because it gets better gas mileage even though it is more expensive. Here is an article I found on more information about this topic for you.

  3. I agree that diesel engines are the better choice when you are trying to figure out which engine you want in your truck. I always thought that a gas engine would be more suitable for a truck. But I now know that diesel is going to save you a lot more money at the pump. I agree that diesel engines have better miles per gallon than regular gas engines. Diesel engines are going to cost you more when you go and try to find a pickup that has a good diesel engine in it. My cousin has to drive a truck for his job and he has gas engine but he told me he would much rather have a diesel engine over a gas any day. http://news.pickuptrucks.com/2014/02/gas-versus-diesel-do-the-math-first.html

  4. Wow..this was interesting. I never really thought about it but gas pickups may cost less when you buy it but maintenance cost more. When gas pickups hit 100,000 miles that’s when parts will start to break but on diesels they can reach up to 300,000 miles before something breaks. Even though diesel fuel cost more than gas, diesel can get better gas millage depending on the pickup.

  5. I read your article and I enjoyed reading it. My father has a diesel GMC 2500 pickup truck, and he sometimes questions the reasoning behind owning it. He does floorsing for a second job, and he does do a lot of hauling for it. You asked “what pickup gets better gas mileage, gas or diesel?” My response would have to be the diesel, because though it is more expensive than gasoline, you can typically run on tank of diesel for a longer period of time than gasoline. I also liked how you actually put numbers and statistics in this blog to back up your statements. Here is a link that reports on the differences between gasoline and diesel. http://www.eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/

  6. I think that this article is cool. It talks about very modern issues like how we are trying to help the environment and that. I did not know that electric cars hurt the environment worse than a regular would. This blog shows good differences between the types of trucks. I now know what to look for when I buy a truck, like you explained that the gas powered ones are not as dependable and stuff like that. Diesel gets good gas mileage, it can deliver 20-30% better fuel economy than gas powered. Diesel is now more than gas though. It used to be much less than gas, but has now very much risen in price. Diesels cost more because they have to safely use diesel so it is safe for the environment. 7. I really like your topic and I think you did a very good job. I personally also find diesel vs. gas trucks very interesting as well. I think you know a lot about the topic and it reflected in the blog. I think the wording made it easy for someone who doesn’t know much about the topic. I will always prefer a diesel pickup over a gas and personally will never understand why anyone would buy a gas truck. Never the less great blog and very interesting topic.http://www.trucktrend.com/features/tech/163_0210_diesel_vs_gas/ this link talks about power/torque in the two types of engines.

  8. I agree that Diesel is the better choice for fuel efficiency and the environment. Though the main problem with most people the price at the pump. These people are unaware of the better gas mileage of a diesel vehicle. Though many think hybrids are the best choice for fuel economy some diesel cars get almost double a gas hybrid. Plus Diesel vehicles cost more due to the extra reinforcement to be able to safely use diesel make the vehicle last longer.
