Air Pollution, Killing Our Planet

Air pollution is a major problem in our world. Air pollution is a mixture of solid particles and gases in the air that harm the planet as well as us. The Earth does a pretty good job cleaning a limited amount of pollution out of the atmosphere. Unfortunately, man-made pollutant is too numerous for the Earth to clean out. This is a huge problem today that hurts both us and the planet; we need to act now before it gets worse.

There are many causes of air pollution.  First, manufacturing is a large cause of this because it spews particulate matter and chemicals in the air. Factories and large machinery is a man-made problem that creates the pollution. The burning of fossil fuels is another big factor in air pollution. We burn fossil fuels in our cars every day. Natural processes such as volcanic eruptions and wildfires also create air pollution. Fortunately, the earth is able to clean this kind of pollution on its own.

Air pollution affects many things around and in us. Studies show that it increases the chances of children being born with defects. This happens when pregnant women are in areas with high levels of carbon monoxide or nitrogen oxide. Also, we people are two times more likely to have asthma due to breathing in polluted air. One of the most major affects air pollution has on us is an increased chance of developing cancer. Air pollutants consist of mostly carcinogens.

city-pollutionAir pollution leads in all negative results. The gases given off from burning fossil fuels mixed with rain is called acid rain. It’s very harmful to animals and crops and very dangerous for humans. It also creates smog, a fog made from smoke and other air pollutants. Health problems are another huge result from air pollutants.

Air pollution is hurting us all and our environment. Not only does it affect the Earth’s conditions, but it affects our health and puts us at risk. Since we know the causes, we can start to come up with solutions on how to prevent air pollution. If we act now, we can save the lives of many. The choice is yours, breathing in clean, fresh air, or breathing in harmful chemicals that slowly kills the human race as we know it.

  1. What can you do in your community to stop air pollution?
  2. At this rate, what do you think our planet will look like in 20 years?
  3. How do you think scientist’s would react to a sudden change in carbon monoxide levels?

  1. Smog is a common problem that often accompanies air pollution. Although you can see smog, the air pollution can also be invisible. There are tons of different types of air pollutants, like methane, sulfur dioxide, and many others. Some different solutions include driving less (or car pooling, if a group of people are all going to the same place) and recycling. http://environment.nationalgeographic.com/environment/global-warming/pollution-overview/

  2. Good jobs on your blog, I found it really interesting, I know everyone had been talking about air pollution forever and it seems like we haven’t done anything to help with air pollution. On http://environment.nationalgeographic.com/environment/global-warming/pollution-overview/ I found that there are many different air pollutions, like smog that a visible air pollution that is over major cities, like Los Angeles. Smog is a cross between fog and smoke (like factory smoke= air pollution) and it is one of the visible air pollutions like acid rain. Some of the less visible air pollutants are carbon dioxide a green house gas, from cars and factories. This is a very large problem for us and earth, we need to take care of earth and the very thin layers of the ozone, we don’t want to be like China and how they already have a hole in the ozone.

  3. I agree 100% when you say that air pollution is a big problem in the world. Air pollution is killing the environment, humans are being harmed from it, and so are animals. I think that a person can try to stop adding to the pollution themselves by riding their bike, taking the bus, or even walking to places. However, most people don’t care about air pollution and causing harm to the environment, and that’s a big problem. I think that our planet will be a lot filthier in 20 years. Considering that there is already trash everywhere you go in the world, I think that it will be even worse. I think that scientists would be happy if the levels went down, as it would help from harming people. Here’s a link to further information on air pollution.
