Why are Some People Left-Handed?

Many people wonder why some people are left hand dominant and some are right hand dominant. Even crows have proven to show if they are left beaked or right beaked. It shows because they have preferences on what side they hold the stick they use to poke larvae out of holes. Do all animals have a dominant side? 12% of the population is left handed but what causes that?

There are many theories on why some people are left-handed but the causes is still unknown. One in ten people are left-handed though. One theory on this is on how people’s brains are organized. Some scientists believe that it depends on what half of the brain you use. The right side of the brain controls the left side of the body while the left side of the brain controls the right side of the body. Scientists also think that people who use the left side of their brain are more organized and good with numbers. People who use the right side Left Handed Pie Graphof their brain are found to be more creative and inventive. “Other psychologists say that left-handed people have superior mental abilities, and often excel in math, music, chess, and art.” (A.D.A.M. Life’s Greatest Mysteries).

It used to be thought that left-handed people were from the devil. People used to be forced to learn how to do everything with their right hands. There is even a Lefties day on August 13th.The bible says great things about the right hand but never says anything negative about the left hand. Maybe being left-handed is a random thing that only affects about 10% of the population.

Being left hand dominant is more common in males. Left-handed people also make better tennis players and on average they grow up quicker. They use to be perceived as less bright than right-hand dominant people also. Again scientists think being left hand dominant or right hand dominant is based on how your brain is wired. This isn’t a proven concept but what many people agree on. When technology and science advances we will know for sure why some people are left handed.

In conclusion the chance of being left-handed has a 1 out of 10 chance.  They use to be thought of as lower class but are now not as separated. Being left-handed is most likely caused by how the brain is organized but can’t be proven yet. With being on average more artistic and imaginative many famous artists and celebrities are left-handed. Those are some facts on being left hand dominant and what might cause it.

Many scientists have noticed that left-handedness tends to run in the family, so its assumed that it has a genetic component. They have even speculated that a single gene could control the left-right preference in humans. A group of researchers has linked this preference to the development of asymmetry in the brain and body. Humans are the only species that show a distinct bias toward either hand. However, animals such as polar bears and chimpanzees have been known to prefer one hand over the other. Right and left handedness is split almost 50/50 in this species opposed to a 90/10 split for humans.

  2. This blog was really interesting, and it’s cool to see why people are left handed. I wonder why it is more common in males though. It is crazy to see what people thought a long time ago. Like when you said that people used to think that people who are left handed are from the devil. That’s ridiculous. It is interesting to know though, that it is probably connected to your brain. http://www.livescience.com/655-lefty-myths-mysteries-persist.html

  3. According to http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/what-causes-some-people-t/ , what hand is your dominant hand is a matter of genetics. There are 2 alleles, the D gene (right handed) and the C gene (chance, meaning equal chance of being right or left handed). That means that is someone has DD, they are right handed, DC, there is a greater chance of being right handed but you could still be left handed, and CC which gives the person an equal chance of being right or left handed.

  4. This was very intriguing, I had never heard about how people thought that left-handed people were thought to be from the devil. After looking into it more, I discovered that Left-handedness was thought of as a defect. In 1922, a paper in New Jersey had an article with the title “Left-handedness is cured among pupils.” I was very interesting to discover more about the history of left-handedness.

  5. thank you, your blog was a very interesting topic and i learned a lot. i did some more research and found some very interesting things about left handed people including that left handed people can be more likely to be alcoholics, Insomniacs, and allergenics. being left handed can also be a good thing like, better at multi-tasking and higher 3D perception and thinking.

  6. This blog was very interesting learning different facts about left handed people. It still is very strange that very little people in the world are left hand dominant. After researching more I found that when the D gene is more frequent it promotes a right hand preference. When a C gene occurs there is a 50 percent chance of the person being left handed. http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/what-causes-some-people-t/ Another theory scientist say why left handed people are left handed is because of genetic causes.

  7. This post is very insightful on why people are left or right handed. In the link below I did some of my own research, and found that some studies show that left handed people have a lower life expectancy than right handed people. Some scientists say that one gene can be the difference between being left handed or right handed. It talks about how the effect some genes might have on handedness depends on how many mutations the alleles go through. Most animals, like chimpanzees, also show a preference to what hand they use. However, unlike humans, animals are generally 50/50 and don’t show a bias on what hand they use, while humans are 90/10. Also in this blog it talks about how famous people are left-handed, and in the site it says that Barrack Obama is left-handed.

  8. This blog was very instructive and helpful for me to realize the difference between left/right handed people. Same as today, left-handed people are the minority among the population. Your mental health may depend of your handedness. The use of both hemispheres of the brain can lead to disorders. In some cases, left-handed people may even have the advantage in sports because of rareness. Emotional behaviors in left-handers may be more angry and embarrassed. This is mostly because of their connection from the brain to the body. As a fun fact, left-handed people even have an entire day dedicated to them.
