Binge Drinking in Adolecents

DrinkingWhen you were an adolescent, did you drink? A big problem in adolescents is binge drinking. Binge drinking in adolescents is linked to many problems later on in the brain. There have been labs on rats to prove the effects of binge drinking on the brain. It can also lead to a more difficult path to success because of the behaviors drinking causes. Binge drinking can cause mental problems physically and emotionally.

One way drinking affects you is by damaging your brain. Brain pathways are still developing in adolescents and doesn’t stop till you’re an adult. It can affect the physical development of neural pathways in the prefrontal cortex. The prefrontal cortex is very important for decision making and regulating emotions and impulses. It can also lead to memory problems, impulsivity and increased risk of alcoholism in adulthood. Along with that it can lead to an anxiety that will continue throughout adulthood. It is very important to take drinking seriously as an adolescent since you are more sensitive to it. Because of the myelin you’re affecting you can get other psychiatric conditions that have to do with the prefrontal cortex such as Schizophrenia and Tourette syndrome. Drinking should be taken seriously.

Not only does it cause physical damage to brain development it is also a common attribute in student problems. Bad grades, fights, injuries, suicide attempts, mental-health issues and sexual assaults are included in these problems. It can also make graduating more difficult given they are more likely to skip class, get in trouble, and not study. Not only can this occur but people also die from alcohol poisoning. Drinking is a very dangerous decision.

Drinking in adolescents can cause many physical and emotional effects to the brain. Teen drinking should be taken more seriously. A lot of people are unaware of the effects it has on the brain and how life threatening they can be.

Some deaths in North Dakota from U-Mary have died from drinking and driving. U-Mary is the number 1 drinking college in North Dakota with the close runner up with Grand Forks.
